About Us

Col. Sri Ram Nath ChopraRegional Research Laboratory (RRL), Jammu a constituent unit of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi, is one of the premier Institutes engaged in two major areas of research namely, Drug, Design and Development and Microbial Biotechnology. However, overall aim of this Institute is to boost the industrial development of the North Western region of the country. The Laboratory was established in 1941 as a low key research and production centre known as Drug Research Laboratory of J&K State and was later taken over by CSIR in December 1957. The Institute was lucky to have Col. Sir Ram Nath Chopra, Prof. of Pharmacology as its Founder Director. He was an outstanding luminary in the field of Medical Education and Research and has been widely acclaimed as the Father of Indian Pharmacology.

Idea

The idea of setting up of the Drug Research Laboratory was conceived in January 1940 by Col. Sir Ram Nath Chopra, Director, School of Tropical Medicine, Calcutta, the then Chief Minister of J&K State, Sir N. Gopala Swamy Iyenger and Sir Sri Ram, a leading Industrialist after an investiture ceremony held in Delhi at which all the three were knighted by the British Government. The basic aim of setting up of this laboratory was to gainfully exploit the biodiversity of the Himalayas and put the state on the scientific map of India and the world. As a follow up action, Sir P.H. Clutterbuck, the then Chief Conservator of Forests J&K Govt. and Col. Sir R. N. Chopra were mainly instrumental in the birth of Drug Research Laboratory in November 1941, which was involved in manufacture of selected drugs and also research in the specialized disciplines of Botany, Chemistry, Pharmacology of medicinal and aromatic plants.

Objectives

The objectives of the Laboratory widened and research programmes related to utilization of all the natural resources were taken up, may these be of biological or mineral origin. Thus Drug Research Laboratory evolved into Regional Research Laboratory in December 1957 when it was taken over by the CSIR.

Dr. G.N.QaziThe long journey traversed by this Institute, till date is interspersed with prominent milestones which be speak of its track record of achievements. Presently the Institute is headed by Dr. G. N. Qazi a biotechnologist of repute.

Dr. G.N.Qazi, has taken over as Director of Regional Research Laboratory, Jammu recently. He succeds Dr. S. S. Handa after his retirement from the post. For more...

Focus

Regional Research Laboratory, Jammu , like all other RRL's was designed to be a multidisciplinary Institute with emphasis on applied and developmental aspects to suit the regional aspirations.

We changed our focal point of activities as per the demand of the changing times and developed our competence accordingly to direct our efforts effectively. This laboratory has come up to the expectations of the monitoring and other supporting agencies over the years and has been keeping up with the Nation's think-tank. The Institute has always kept the futuristic trends in science in view and created the infrastructure as well as human resource to face the new challenges.

Over the last few years the activities of Regional Research Laboratory have become more focused. In the research and development work of the institute more attention is being paid to prospecting the abundant natural resources available, both of plant and microbial origin, enabled by biotechnology, to develop technologies, drugs and products of high value for the national and international markets. The unproductive projects are being regularly evaluated and phased out on the pattern suggested under Zero Base Budget System. The resources are also allocated accordingly. The research projects of the institute are centered on the following thrust areas :

•  Prospecting biodiversity for its chemistry and bioactivity.

•  Prospecting microbial biodiversity of North-Western Himalayas for thermostable enzymes for industrial applications.

•  Development of plant based agents as bioefficacy promoters /bioenhancers.

•  Conservation and production of prioritized medicinal & aromatic plants and their crop husbandry.

•  Process development and upscale technology for valuable phytopharmaceuticals.

We are also committed to work on societal programmes meant for the upliftment of under privileged class of rural poor. Some of the major highlights of activities at RRL during the period 2000 to 2005 are as under:

Focus on productive and contemporary research :

Regional Research Laboratory, Jammu regularly conducts the annual ZBB exercise through a High Level Committee as a result of which, during the past five years, non-productive projects on minerals & composite materials, cellulose, paper & pulp, fur technology, silk & silk products and food technology have been closed. Instead, four new contemporary R&D facilities such as Bio-organic Chemistry, Organic Synthesis, Anti-infective Research and Quality Control & Assurance have been created. The manpower existing in the closed projects have been provided adequate training to work in the new areas relevant to the Institute. The new divisions have become fully productive by generating publications and patents of high standard besides generating much needed ECF.

Quality Control

Strong central instrumentation, of latest generation, up-to-date library and informatics centres supported by intra and internet facilities are available in this Institute.
The analytical & testing unit of RRL, Jammu has been upgraded to a full fledged Quality Control & Assurance Laboratory. In addition to the analysis and testing of water, mineral, coal, chemicals, pesticides, microorganisms in food and potable & industrial water it will also cater to the needs of exporters of dry & wet fruits from the state of J & K. The process for the accreditation of Quality Control and Assurance department and registration under ISO-9002 is in progress.
